sergio rossi
Maestro Sergio Rossi was born in Genova
(Italy) in 1950. Since early in his childhood, Sergio showed a
particular fascination in following in his father, Alfredo Rossi’s,
footprints. Alfredo operated a glass furnace on the island of Murano.
To Alfredo, Sergio demonstrated an innate talent in mastering the
incandescent magma, which is fusing glass.
As Sergio became more and more enamored with art glass, he was
“pushed” to excel and thus enrolled at the "Accademia di Belle Arti"
in Venice. It was there that he developed his unmistakable and
unique style.
Today, Maestro Rossi's art glass pieces are a continuous search into
the "origins" of glass; his glass sculptures are not mere
reproductions, but an expression of his endless search for different
identities in art that continually torments him.
It is not by chance that many of his
works are in "scavo" (or, I dig) glass. Scavo glass is glass that
resembles pieces that are dug out of the ground after lying in the
ground for centuries. It is not by chance that many of Sergio’s
pieces evoke the work & operas of some of the major painters of our
century. Reason being, these painters are fed by the same
inspirational motivation that inspires Sergio.
Contrary to market dictations, Maestro Rossi still produces art
glass for the pleasure of it, for the love of it, and we should not
be surprised to see that Maestro Rossi will turn down a commissioned
job, simply because, as he puts it, "I don't feel the piece".
Beside his own work, Sergio Rossi has collaborated with various
internationally renowned artists, both in the glass world and out,
which have garnered him some notable awards, including:
• 1999 First Prize at the 23° Veneto Art Show in Padua with a vase
created in cooperation with the Milan architect and designer Matteo
Thun.
• 2000 First Prize at the Padua art show with the piece "Oggetto"
again created with Matteo Thun.
• 2000 Second Prize "De Poli" for the piece "Fruttiera" still out of
the close relationship with Matteo Thun.
In the most recent times Sergio Rossi collaborated with artist
Angelo Rinaldi. Mr. Rinaldi's beautifully shaded, close-up, and
detailed oil paintings are so realistic and lifelike that you'll
think you're looking at photographs. Maestro Rossi took this realism
one step further in the form of glass.
In March 2001, Maestro Rossi participated actively at "La Via del
Vetro" (or, The Road of the Glass) Cultural Event. “La Via del Vetro”
was a traveling art show that visited Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Turkey
and India. It was sponsored by the Sartirana Art Foundation and
Alitalia and heavily promoted by the Italian Ministry for Foreign
Business. The success obtained by this event has been enormous and
has exposed many countries to the beauty and talent of Maestro
Rossi.
Maestro Rossi continues to collaborate with and maintain close
relationships with a host of international artists including, as
mentioned previously, Angelo Rinaldi, Matteo Thun, Master Glass
Blower Cesare Toffolo and Ulisse e Do.
